Why learn English

Learning to speak English well may be the best thing you can do to improve your life.

That's right. Do you think it would be fun to have access to information that other people can't get? Talk and write letters to interesting people that others can't communicate with?
Impress people around you whenever you opened your mouth? Make big jumps in your career, leaving others miles behind?

You can get all this if you speak English well.

Get access to knowledge
What are you interested in? Is it science? Music? Computers? Health? Business? Sports?
Today's media — such as the Internet, television, and the press — give you almost unlimited   access to knowledge about your favorite subjects. After all, we live in the information age, don't we?

There's only one problem. Most of this knowledge is in English.

Here are some examples of knowledge you can use if you know English:

Most pages on the Web. That's over a billion (1,000,000,000) pages of information! It's amazing that learning just one language gives you access to almost all knowledge on the Internet.

Books — on any subject, from all over the world. Read books by British or American authors, and books translated from other languages. Whatever you're interested in, you can read about it in English!

The press. Only English-language magazines and newspapers can be bought in every part of the  world. You don't have to search for Time, Newsweek, or the International Herald Tribune!

Science. English is the key to the world of science. In 1997, 95% of the articles in the Science Citation Index were written in English.

News reports. Watch international television networks, such as CNN International and NBC. They broadcast news much faster, and more professionally, than smaller, national networks. And you can watch them everywhere in the world.

Communicate with people
We like to call English "the language of communication". Why? Because it seems all the people in the world have agreed to use English to talk to each other.

About 1,500,000,000 people in the world speak English. Another 1,000,000,000 are learning it. (source)  75% of the world's letters and postcards are written in English.

All international conferences and competitions are conducted in English.

Diplomats and politicians from different countries use English to communicate with each other. English is the main language of organizations like the United Nations, NATO, and the European Free Trade Association.  If you can communicate in English, you can:
Contact people from all over the world. Talk about your ideas and opinions on the Internet. Send e-mail to interesting people. Learn about their life and culture.

Travel more easily. Communicate with people wherever you go — English is spoken in more than 100 countries (source). Ask directions, have a conversation, or... ask for help. Who knows,  maybe English will save your life someday!

Push your career If you want a good job in business, technology, or science, get out of that armchair and start learning English now! (even If you already have a good job, start learning before you lose  it!)

Knowing English will let you:

Put "excellent knowledge of English" on your CV. Get your dream job, and earn more money.

Gain technical knowledge. English is the language of technology, especially high technology   like computer science, genetics, and medicine. If you're going to read about technology, you'll probably have to do it in English.

English can help you:-
Learn computer science. Read technical articles without difficulty. Or write your own  articles!

Become a:-

World-class businessman (or -woman). It's simple. International business is done in  English. And all business today is international. So if you want to play, you have to know English — to contact other businesspeople, go to conferences, read international business
newspapers and magazines, etc.

English can help you:-

Use your computer more effectively. Most computer applications are in English, so you will understand them better — and become a better employee. Learn new skills for your job. The section "Get access to knowledge" explains how English helps you learn. Enjoy art like never before,  English lets you feel the culture of the world like no other language. Top 10 reasons to study English

English is the most widely spoken language in the world, and is used for everything from international conferences to news reports to popular songs. Here are ten more reasons why you should be learning English.

1. Make friends around the world. English is used by almost 2 billion people around the world and is spoken by many more people as a second language than as a native language. So you can use English to speak to people from Azerbaijan to Andorra, Venezuela to Vietnam, Chile to Cameroon...
2. Earn more money! English is the language of many important industries, including science, aviation, computing, diplomacy, and tourism. With good English skills, you can dramatically improve your job prospects as well as your earning potential.
3. Travel the world. You can't be expected to learn the local language of every place you visit, so you might as well learn one that you can use everywhere! And knowing English lets you connect with local people and not just other tourists.
4. Read great literature in its original form. Whether your taste leans towards Shakespeare or Tolkien, Hamlet or Harry Potter, English has some of the best-loved literature of all time. And how better to read it than in the language in which it was written?
5. Do business. With 80% of international business communications written in English and most of the world's trade and financial deals conducted in the language, there's no doubt that English is the language of international business. Knowing English could give you the chance to start your own company, visit foreign countries on business or work abroad.
6. Embrace the Information age. English is the main language of the Internet, and knowing the language provides infinite access to online
information, shopping, news, entertainment, education, fun and friendship.
7. Study abroad. Ever dreamed of studying at Oxford or Cambridge, Harvard or Yale? English can give you access to some of the best universities in the world, and gain an international education that will open doors wherever you go.
8. Keep Informed. English is the language of international media and communications, with three quarters of the world's mail sent in English and more than half of the world's newspapers published in English. You might be missing out on important information and the bigger picture if you can't understand the language.
9. Be entertained. American films and television are shown all over the world, and English songs are books are heard and read everywhere.
10. Learn the international language. English is the predominant language of almost 50 countries, and is the official language of many international organizations and professional bodies, from the United Nations to the Olympics.

Learning is a skill and it can be improved.

Your path to learning effectively is through knowing

  • yourself
  • your capacity to learn
  • processes you have successfully used in the past
  • your interest, and knowledge of what you wish to learn
  • Motivate yourself

If you are not motivated to learn English you will become frustrated and give up. Ask yourself the following questions, and be honest:-

Why do you need to learn/improve English?
Where will you need to use English?
What skills do you need to learn/improve? (Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking)
How soon do you need to see results?
How much time can you afford to devote to learning English.
How much money can you afford to devote to learning English.
Do you have a plan or learning strategy?
Set yourself achievable goals

You know how much time you can dedicate to learning English, but a short time each day will produce better, longer-term results than a full day on the weekend and then nothing for two weeks.

Joining a course that takes place 24/7 three months could produce better results

Course : Introduction

The first part of this module is introducing you to the different topics that we have prepared for your oral practice. Each topic is chosen based on how common it is used in our daily conversations. There are some things that we include here that will not be found anywhere else. This is the special feature that we have prepared especially for your learning pleasure.
Part one gives you a brief background on each topic that will be covered throughout your oral learning. Some history or basic knowledge of a particular subject is given because we believe that in order for one to be able to speak on a particular topic or issue, he or she has to have at least a basic knowledge on them, or that person will face difficulties in expressing themselves or even to just elaborate further. Therefore, conversations will end before its time. Speaking efforts will fail. Communication will die. Why is it so important for us to acquire the communication skills?
The Oxford Learners Dictionary says that communication is the process of expressing feelings and ideas or of giving information. Whereas T.A. Murphy, former Chairman of General Motors said:
Quote:

"The one common denominator in business and in management is people and relationships with people... in the final analysis, communication is all important...effective communications can make the difference between success and failure, or at least it can determine the degree of success."

From this quote, we realize how vital it is to be able to communicate. Maybe some of us have overlooked the issue that our daily conversations, be it formal or informal, contributes to our progress, advancement and success. With this at the back of our minds, we have come up with OE2U.com for your individual and personal practice at home, work or where ever you may be.
Below are some principles of an effective communication or speaking:
  • an active listener shows interest and acceptance
  • eye contact is important
  • be open minded and avoid prejudging the person speaking or the message
  • tune into words, meanings and feelings conveyed
  • focus on the central message or the message being sent
  • note the other person's body language (and yours too)
  • avoid interrupting
  • listen first then respond - listening is an art
  • respond to what is communicated rather than how it is being sent
  • ask questions to verify your understanding
  • understand that communication involves sending & receiving
  • "I" messages are more effective (I think, I feel); "should" and "ought" hinder communication
  • more effective when it is talking with and to rather than at the other person
  •

Some additional principles when communicating are:
  • posture - standing or sitting
  • distance and contact
  • gestures
  • expressions
  • voice
  • fluency
  • timing
  • content

We hope that with these brief backgrounds you will read on each topic will prepare you to converse well and proud the next time you are stuck in a social situation.

Course : Short Conversations / Dialogues

The second part of this module provides you with short conversations or dialogues for your self-practice. For each topic that you have covered in Part One, 5 simple dialogues are designed to follow suit. From here, you will have the essentials of speaking on a particular issue. Besides that, we also highlight some key vocabulary or words that we believe are necessary for you to know to be a proficient speaker in the future. At the end of each module, you will find easy-to-do exercises that will test your memory abilities in remembering expressions as used in the dialogues that you have done at the earlier part of each module. The answers are given after each dialogue exercise.
Sentences in the conversations are structured as how they will be exactly spoken. We try as much as possible to keep the situations, expressions and sentences in each dialogue, as close as to real life speaking. This is to allow you to be able to re-use the words learnt or the sentences practised in your everyday life when you are faced with similar situations. It is advised that you speak the dialogues out loud when you are practicing them because this way, you will be able to hear yourself well and improve as the time passes.
Here are some daily tips for you to remember when you speak in any social events - formal or informal:
  • Avoid - "I don't know..."
  • Don't say - "We can't do that..."
  • Say "please" and "thank you" a lot
  • Be the first to say "Hello"
  • Compliment - even for small achievements
There are some common speaking rules that most of us forget or do not bother to remember:
  • Don't talk when your mouth is full
  • If you are spoken to, you must reply
  • Look a person in the eye when you speak
  • Refrain from using profane and obscene words in the company of other people
  • If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all
  • If you don't want to be heard, then drop the volume of your voice
  • If you are not heard, then repeat yourself
  • If there are more people, allow some time for each to speak
These may look petty but in many cases they lead to your speaking pitfall. So, be very careful. You do not want to speak and be hated, you want to speak and be remembered.
One other important factor that you must always keep in mind is the people whom you are speaking to especially in Malaysia where we have different cultures and different ethnic groups. What may appear positive to you might be a negative one to another. The things that you should look out for are:
  • social values
  • roles and status
  • decision making customs
  • concepts of time
  • concepts of personal space
  • cultural concept
  • body language
  • social behavior and manners
We hope that at the end of this program, you will be a better and more effective speaker and more confident of yourself to speak in any social situations.

Course: Communication Skills

"Listening is a powerful a means of communication and influence as to talk well." -John Marshall
There seems to be growing realization of the importance of solid listening and communication skills in business and every day life. After all, lack of attention and respectful listening can be costly- leading to mistakes, poor services, misarranged goals, wasted time and lack of teamwork.
This is why this programme starts with foundation of listening skills. You can't communicate unless you understand; you can't manage unless you understand ones motivation; and you can't gain consensus unless you understand each individuals feeling about the issue at hand.
This programme consist of dialogues people use in everyday communication in various situations. Listen to the dialogues carefully and you may practice them for they will come handy to you. They are all set in our local context. You will listen to people using it.
The dialogues are followed by five (5) simple questions to improve your understanding of what is been said. Understanding what one says is important for effective communication. Since they are based in our local context, they will surely be of great assistance.

Course : Survival English

The most important thing you can do when preparing for your test is taking practice tests. The saying goes, "Practice Makes Perfect," and if you want a high test score, then you need to take as many practice tests as possible.
How To Find Reliable Practice Tests First, find a source of reliable practice tests. Sometimes, the best source will be the test writers (the official organization that gives the test). However, there can be problems with this approach.
Sometimes there are only a few practice tests available, or sometimes none at all.
As a test taker, you want to “beat” the test. The test writers don’t want that to happen. Often, the “official” practice tests are old and outdated, and do not reflect the test’s current content. We believe this is probably intentional, to prevent students from using the method we describe.
