Course : Introduction

The first part of this module is introducing you to the different topics that we have prepared for your oral practice. Each topic is chosen based on how common it is used in our daily conversations. There are some things that we include here that will not be found anywhere else. This is the special feature that we have prepared especially for your learning pleasure.
Part one gives you a brief background on each topic that will be covered throughout your oral learning. Some history or basic knowledge of a particular subject is given because we believe that in order for one to be able to speak on a particular topic or issue, he or she has to have at least a basic knowledge on them, or that person will face difficulties in expressing themselves or even to just elaborate further. Therefore, conversations will end before its time. Speaking efforts will fail. Communication will die. Why is it so important for us to acquire the communication skills?
The Oxford Learners Dictionary says that communication is the process of expressing feelings and ideas or of giving information. Whereas T.A. Murphy, former Chairman of General Motors said:
Quote:

"The one common denominator in business and in management is people and relationships with people... in the final analysis, communication is all important...effective communications can make the difference between success and failure, or at least it can determine the degree of success."

From this quote, we realize how vital it is to be able to communicate. Maybe some of us have overlooked the issue that our daily conversations, be it formal or informal, contributes to our progress, advancement and success. With this at the back of our minds, we have come up with OE2U.com for your individual and personal practice at home, work or where ever you may be.
Below are some principles of an effective communication or speaking:
  • an active listener shows interest and acceptance
  • eye contact is important
  • be open minded and avoid prejudging the person speaking or the message
  • tune into words, meanings and feelings conveyed
  • focus on the central message or the message being sent
  • note the other person's body language (and yours too)
  • avoid interrupting
  • listen first then respond - listening is an art
  • respond to what is communicated rather than how it is being sent
  • ask questions to verify your understanding
  • understand that communication involves sending & receiving
  • "I" messages are more effective (I think, I feel); "should" and "ought" hinder communication
  • more effective when it is talking with and to rather than at the other person
  •

Some additional principles when communicating are:
  • posture - standing or sitting
  • distance and contact
  • gestures
  • expressions
  • voice
  • fluency
  • timing
  • content

We hope that with these brief backgrounds you will read on each topic will prepare you to converse well and proud the next time you are stuck in a social situation.

Course : Short Conversations / Dialogues

The second part of this module provides you with short conversations or dialogues for your self-practice. For each topic that you have covered in Part One, 5 simple dialogues are designed to follow suit. From here, you will have the essentials of speaking on a particular issue. Besides that, we also highlight some key vocabulary or words that we believe are necessary for you to know to be a proficient speaker in the future. At the end of each module, you will find easy-to-do exercises that will test your memory abilities in remembering expressions as used in the dialogues that you have done at the earlier part of each module. The answers are given after each dialogue exercise.
Sentences in the conversations are structured as how they will be exactly spoken. We try as much as possible to keep the situations, expressions and sentences in each dialogue, as close as to real life speaking. This is to allow you to be able to re-use the words learnt or the sentences practised in your everyday life when you are faced with similar situations. It is advised that you speak the dialogues out loud when you are practicing them because this way, you will be able to hear yourself well and improve as the time passes.
Here are some daily tips for you to remember when you speak in any social events - formal or informal:
  • Avoid - "I don't know..."
  • Don't say - "We can't do that..."
  • Say "please" and "thank you" a lot
  • Be the first to say "Hello"
  • Compliment - even for small achievements
There are some common speaking rules that most of us forget or do not bother to remember:
  • Don't talk when your mouth is full
  • If you are spoken to, you must reply
  • Look a person in the eye when you speak
  • Refrain from using profane and obscene words in the company of other people
  • If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all
  • If you don't want to be heard, then drop the volume of your voice
  • If you are not heard, then repeat yourself
  • If there are more people, allow some time for each to speak
These may look petty but in many cases they lead to your speaking pitfall. So, be very careful. You do not want to speak and be hated, you want to speak and be remembered.
One other important factor that you must always keep in mind is the people whom you are speaking to especially in Malaysia where we have different cultures and different ethnic groups. What may appear positive to you might be a negative one to another. The things that you should look out for are:
  • social values
  • roles and status
  • decision making customs
  • concepts of time
  • concepts of personal space
  • cultural concept
  • body language
  • social behavior and manners
We hope that at the end of this program, you will be a better and more effective speaker and more confident of yourself to speak in any social situations.

This is why this programme starts with foundation of listening skills. You can't communicate unless you understand; you can't manage unless you understand ones motivation; and you can't gain consensus unless you understand each individuals feeling about the issue at hand.
This programme consist of dialogues people use in everyday communication in various situations. Listen to the dialogues carefully and you may practice them for they will come handy to you. They are all set in our local context. You will listen to people using it.
The dialogues are followed by five (5) simple questions to improve your understanding of what is been said. Understanding what one says is important for effective communication. Since they are based in our local context, they will surely be of great assistance.

Course :Interactive Oral English Class

The most important thing you can do when preparing for your test is taking practice tests. The saying goes, "Practice Makes Perfect," and if you want a high test score, then you need to take as many practice tests as possible.
How To Find Reliable Practice Tests First, find a source of reliable practice tests. Sometimes, the best source will be the test writers (the official organization that gives the test). However, there can be problems with this approach.
Sometimes there are only a few practice tests available, or sometimes none at all.
As a test taker, you want to “beat” the test. The test writers don’t want that to happen. Often, the “official” practice tests are old and outdated, and do not reflect the test’s current content. We believe this is probably intentional, to prevent students from using the method we describe.
